I was born on May 6, 1940, in New York City. Jo wanted to name me Arthur Sargent Shirley after her father. Fortunately for me, she considered the initials, and then reconsidered the name. Having to move on to a second choice, Jo named me after her favorite movie-star, Richard Barthelmess, and Richard Sargent Shirley was placed on my birth certificate.
